I’ve been aware of this band but never listened to their music. I like all the videos you posted so will have to go give some of their work a listen. Thanks for the intro!

That's a band that knows how good it is and songwriting / composition that understands what it wants to do. I've seen the name before, but I think I was confusing them with someone else. Also gives me that feeling of late 90s—early 2000s lounge stuff that I loved. Real cool, this is pretty untouchable!

Thanks, Jamie! Seth Applebaum was in a punky garage rock band, The Mad Doctors, before going off and experimenting with sounds that would later become GFO. Are you familiar with them?

While GFO's love is obviously grabbing inspiration from those late '60s Axelrod albums (which I love!), they sufficiently and very effectively take it into fresh, new territory. I heard an interview where Applebaum talks about one song having 78 parts! He embellishes his sonic canvas and hears multidimensional sounds similar to how German artist, Anselm Kiefer, constructs his complex, multilayered, and highly embellished canvases. Personally, I think he's a musical genius. What is particularly exciting is having seen them live twice, they can pull it off brilliantly on stage. You should definitely check them out if they come to Houston! You won't be disappointed.

Never heard Mad Doctors but I'll go check. Can definitely hear the Axelrod influence. As well as the whole of Italian film scoring of the 60s and early 70s. And I'm a total sucker for a good visual art comparison, and I've never thought of Anselm Keefer in that manner before, which as a Stereolab fan, the idea of layering should be something I think about often. Now you've given me a different access point.

Absolutely on the Italian film/library music comparison. The amazing 'Freedom Power' album comes to mind.

Stereolab definitely know a thing or two about layering sounds!
